Community Outreach Committee shines during COVID-19 pandemic

community outreach

As the COVID-19 pandemic continued, Community Outreach Committee members from the New London region persevered to help the community they serve. Katie Poitras, practice supervisor, and Stephanie Davis, MA II, from Northeast Medical Group Cardiology - Waterford delivered Subway sandwiches, chips, cookies, juice and water to residents of the New London Homeless Hospitality Center.

The food delivery was held in place of the monthly meal service traditionally hosted by individual NEMG offices. Due to the restrictions on entry to the Center, volunteers were unable to serve the meals. The center is a place of safety and welcome to adults facing homelessness in southeastern Connecticut. It collaborates with dozens of public and private programs and agencies to address the underlying causes of homelessness for each person and help him or her find permanent housing as quickly as possible.

“This outreach during a time of crisis is an honored example of the commitment our committee and NEMG staff have to assist the community regardless of extra barriers we may face,” said Kimberley Abell, clinical optimization specialist. “We look forward to returning to our monthly schedule once restrictions are lifted and it is safe for our staff and the Center patrons.”
