Throughout October, NEMG Community Outreach Committee (COC) members from the New London region held a drive to collect new socks for men, women and children, with all donations benefitting both the New London Homeless Hospitality Center and the WARM Center of Westerly, RI.
On Nov. 15, COC member Maureen Leach, DNP, AGNP-BC, presented 372 pairs of socks to the New London Homeless Hospitality Center - a place of safety and welcome to adults facing homelessness in southeastern Connecticut. Ashely Brady, PSA II, delivered 200 more pairs to the WARM Center of Westerly, RI - a social services agency providing professional and compassionate wraparound programming for those in need in southern Rhode Island and southeastern Connecticut.
“They were planning on getting the socks right out,” said Leach, who played a large role in coordinating the event alongside Tracy Cottrell, administrative associate. “Someone started separating the socks before I left. The bin had been just about depleted. Apparently they only serve adults, but luckily work very closely with an organization that serves children as well.”
“The Sock Drive was started several years ago by one of our nurses and continues to be very successful,” said Cottrell. “This year we split our efforts between New London and Stonington/Westerly areas.”
