Preventing slips, trips, and falls
Work related slips, trips and falls can result in serious disabling injuries that impact an employee’s ability to do their job, resulting in:
- Lost workdays
- Reduced productivity
- Expensive worker compensation claims
- Decreased ability to care for patients
While taking safety precautions are a top priority at Yale New Haven Health, accidents still happen. Listed below are the top 10 causes of slips, trips and falls:
- Contaminants on the floor (water, grease, oil, fluid, food)
- Tripping hazards: clutter, loose cords, hoses, wires, medical tubing
- Indoor walking surface irregularities
- Stairs and handrails
- Step stools and ladders
- Improper use of floormats and runners
- Poor drainage from pipes and drains
- Inadequate lighting
- Weather conditions: Ice and snow
- Outdoor walking surface irregularities
Please follow these basic education and awareness tips:
- Provide education and awareness on fall prevention to staff
- Clean up any noticeable spill, or call Environmental Services if cleanup is needed
- Be attentive to what you are doing, do not talk on a cell phone or text while walking
- Wear proper footwear with traction
As winter approaches, please be mindful that preparedness is essential to avoid injuries during the colder months. Winter planning reminders include:
- Wear proper winter footwear, carry your work shoes into work
- Be aware of your surroundings
- Do not use a cell phone while walking on ice or snow
- Carry your belongings in a backpack, so both hands are free
- Walk slowly and carefully - Walk like a penguin
