From the moment we start walking as toddlers our feet take us everywhere. Despite how much we depend on them, people usually don’t think about their feet unless something is wrong. Matthew D’Angelo, DPM, podiatry, Northeast Medical Group, North Haven, wants to change that by offering some tips for putting your best foot forward.
Late summer and fall offer plenty of outdoor activities for New England residents. Footwear should always be top of mind, whether you are adventuring or taking it easy.
“We all like to wear flip flops and sandals because they’re light and easy to slip on and off,” he said. “But they provide almost zero arch or ankle support. If you wear flip flops or flat sandals too much you can end up with plantar fasciitis.”
Dr. D’Angelo explained that plantar fasciitis is a very common foot problem often caused by walking or standing for long periods without arch support. The main symptom of plantar fasciitis is heel pain.
Another heel-related issue Dr. D’Angelo points out is Achilles tendonitis which, he says, is also caused by wearing flat shoes or going barefoot for too long.
“Your body naturally wants to stand with a slight incline and when you’re barefoot or wearing flat shoes, that incline goes away and you get tension on the Achilles,” he said. “Fortunately, Achilles tendonitis can often be relieved by wearing heel lifts in your shoes.”
Dr. D’Angelo also reminds everyone to think of their feet when applying sunscreen.
“We all think of areas like our nose and shoulders because that’s where were get sunburned most often,” he said. “But it doesn’t take very long to get a burn on the tops of your feet when you’re barefoot or wearing sandals. Use a sunscreen with a high SPF (sun protection factor) rating and don’t forget to reapply.”
